ADEQUATE WATER INTAKE

Do you think you drink enough water on a daily basis? Simply put: We need approximately half of our body weight in ounces of water everyday. For example: Joe weighs 200 lbs, so he needs to drink about 100 ounces of water everyday. Keep in mind that we do get water that is stored in nutrients that we eat, particularly in fruits and vegetables, and this may be included in the daily total. There are other variables that may require us to take in even more H2O intake than calculated. For instance, people who drink coffee or alcohol regularly will require more water intake since these substances essentially prevent the absorption of water in our bodies. Inadequate daily water intake for us would be like draining all of the gasoline out of our cars but still expecting it to get us to work. No fuel means no function. It is almost unfortunate that our bodies are resilient enough to keep moving and functioning, to an extent, without adequate amounts of water. But don't be fooled. Just because the parts are moving does not mean that they are not getting damaged and starved. The reason I emphasize drinking water so much is that it is an essential, if not, the most essential nutrient in our bodies. There are many ailments that people have simply due to dehydration. Before taking medication or rushing to the doctors to get X-rays and MRI's when we get headaches or subtle abdominal pain or cramps, we should often start by assessing our daily water intake. If this is adjusted appropriately and symptoms still persists, then seek medical advice. I tell all of my patients during their treatment regimens that they need to increase their water intake in addition to the daily recommendation since injuries drain us that much faster and leave the body dehydrated and less capable of healing. Herbal Teas and lemon are also a great way to make this process more enjoyable and savory. So I guess the question is, "how much water are you going to drink tomorrow"?
